About St Mary Magdalene, Quatford

The church of St Mary Magdalene in Quatford is approximately three miles from Bridgnorth on the A442 to Kidderminster, and the 'mother church' of Bridgnorth.
Built by Roger de Montgomery in fulfilment of a vow made by his wife Lady Adeliza, the church was consecrated in 1086. Roger had a castle at Quatford and established a borough, which along with Shrewsbury, were the only Shropshire boroughs mentioned in the Domesday Book.
In 1101, for military reasons, Quatford was abandoned and almost everything and everyone was moved to what is now Bridgnorth.
The church is sited on a hill overlooking an ancient fortified mound (Camp Hill) and the River Severn. It consists of a chancel, nave, west tower, south aisle and south porch, and is built of local red sandstone and tuffa. The chancel is Norman, the nave was rebuilt in 1714.
Nearly forty steps lead up to the church - installed in 2005, an electrically powered lift enables the disabled (or tired!) easy access.
With ample parking, an elevated position, cosy historic interior, and beautiful surroundings, Quatford church makes a wonderful setting for weddings.
